Announcement: Portfolio Pages Added

As many of you may know, I do a fair amount of web design and graphic design on the side. Today, I’m pleased to announce the addition of portfolio pages for my web and graphic design projects.

Should I Start a Business?

The performing arts company I manage locally is in the market for a new website. As I will be managing the company, I’m trying to delegate as much responsibility as I can, including construction and maintnance of the website for our company.

We have been shopping around for a good local, Christian web developer who can get our website put together and operational. It’s not going to be the simplest site in the world, in that we’re not just going to throw some content up on a server and let that be that. We’ll be constantly updating curricula and calendar information, so it has to be pretty dynamic.

A Lesson in Perspective

Why are directions so hard to give? And so hard, when given, to understand?

Meeting For Coffee

“Sure, I’ll meet you at Starbucks,” I told my sister. I hate coffee, but I really wanted to spend some time with her before her weedding. “Which one are you guys at?”

A Compass Rose

“Oh, the one up north, at 55 and 461,” she replied. “You know, over by Lowe’s.”

I had just been to that very shopping center earlier today, and I knew of no such establishment. “Oh…right. How do you get there again?”

“Well it’s right there, you know, over by Lowe’s.” Hadn’t she already told me that?

“You mean that little coffee stand out in the parking lot by Wal-Mart?”

“No, it’s a walk-in place. You get to it before you come to all those restaurants.”

Now we were getting somewhere. I continued my discussion with her, getting very detailed directions to the Starbucks where she was waiting, that I had no idea 5 minutes ago was there. But the directions just didn’t make sense.

Her Wedding Day

Wedding Bells

Today, my sister is going to be married. It’s been quite a while coming, as she has been dating her husband-to-be for two years today. I am thrilled for them! Please keep them in prayer today and over the next several weeks as they learn and grow and cleave together in marriage.

I’m writing this in a house full of groomsmen as we prepare to leave for the outdoor venue to set up chairs and staging for the ceremony. We’ll be pretty well occupied all day. But don’t worry, I won’t leave you with nothing to read today. Instead, I’ll refer you to an interesting article I recently read.

Easy Intro to RSS

I’m sure that by now, we have all seen this RSS Icon little icon around the internet on many different websites. In fact, if you look up at or near the right-hand side of the address bar, you probably see that icon there right now. Ever wondered what it means, or what on earth it’s good for?

In a word, that icon means this site has an RSS feed. What does that mean? Well, I’ll get to that in a moment.

The Problem

OK, let’s say you like this website, chad-miller.com, quite a lot. That’s very understandable. But let’s say you always want to stay up to date with the intriguing content that is consistently published here, and you don’t want to miss anything.

Not a problem, right? You’ll just come take a look at chad-miller.com every time you get on the computer, just to see if there’s anything new. So far so good?

OK, but let’s say you also really like several other sites, like Jonathan Lowery‘s and Guinn Terry Davis‘ websites, along with several other blogs. How on earth are you going to keep up with them all? Are you going to visit each and every one of them every time you get on the internet?

The Digital Music Jump

Music has been around as long as there have been people. Nearly as long as that, people have been storing music.

An 8-Track Tape

Initially, all people could do is repeat catchy tunes until they could remember them. This is probably the time period when they invented those annoying commercial jingles.

Later, they invented a way to actually write down music, in the form of a musical score. That is of course great if you can read music, or if you have a symphony at your command, but if not the musical score will likely leave you scratching your head.

Of course, in recent centuries, we’ve invented recording devices that can actually record and reproduce sound waves on demand. This started, of course, with the phonograph, and progressed to the 8-track, the cassette tape, and ultimately (in my lifetime, in fact) to the Compact Disc.

Site Launch: Guinn Terry Davis

GuinnTerryDavis.com

Guinn Terry Davis and I go back quite a long time together — he and I met in college back in 2000. We quickly discovered that we had common ground, both in our respective family businesses and in the fact that we were both newcomers to the stage.

Guinn is quite a gifted writer, having written or co-written in the neighborhood of one zillion plays, musicals, short stories, articles, and such. Some of his work is award-winning material.

It’s been quite an honor for me to be able to design his personal website. Please drop by his site and have a look at some of the things he’s written, and even leave a comment or two for him.

And if his site doesn’t make you laugh, I’ll give you your money back. (Don’t worry, the check’s in the mail.)

Site Launch: Jonathan Lowery

I do many varied things professionally, but my first (professional) love is firmly planted in the realm of Geekdom: computer programming. As a programmer, I find myself working online more and more frequently, and as I’ve explored the artistic side of myself, design work just seemed to naturally draw me.

Today, I’m frequently hired to do professional web designs for a variety of clients. As the clients’ sites are released publicly, I’ll be able to highlight the launches here.

JonathanLowery.com

JonathanLowery.com

I’ve known Jonathan Lowery since college. He and I have worked together more than once, so it was a great pleasure for me to be asked to design his personal website.

Jonathan is quite a talented performer and gifted choreographer, not to mention a very good friend.

If you get a chance, please drop by his site and check out the design, but also check out the things he’s written, and maybe leave a comment or two for Jonathan. I can guarantee you’ll be enriched by his acquaintance.

A New Start

Allow me to welcome you to this, my new-and-improved personal website.

This is far from being my first attempt at a personal website, but this is also by far my most serious effort to date. (For the curious, you can have a look at some of my early attempts here and here, and you can have a look at some of my old college class journals here and here.) I’ll be adding content and pictures to this site on a semi-regular basis, and hopefully most of it will be worth reading.

Thanks for visiting, don’t be a stranger!
